REMORA Symposium in La Réunion: Advancing Ocean Science from Europe’s Outermost Regions
From 6 to 10 October 2025, La Réunion will host the first REMORA Symposium, gathering scientists, policy-makers, and stakeholders from across Europe and beyond to co-design new pathways for marine research and innovation. Organised under the Horizon Europe project REMORA – Small fishes in a big pond, this high-level event will showcase how Europe’s Outermost Regions — Madeira, the Azores, and La Réunion — contribute unique assets to global ocean science and sustainability.
The symposium will combine plenary sessions, thematic workshops, and field visits to highlight research infrastructures, biodiversity hotspots, and blue economy initiatives in the Indian Ocean. It will also serve as a platform to present REMORA’s progress on strengthening international networks, promoting EU-added value research niches, and fostering synergies between European Structural and Investment Funds and Horizon Europe.
By bringing together leading experts, the event aims to boost collaboration opportunities for outermost-region research centres with European “champion” institutions, advance shared priorities under the EU Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters”, and reinforce the visibility of these regions in the European Research Area.
