The Regional Directorate for Fisheries and the Sea (DIREÇÃO REGIONAL de PESCAS e MAR - DRPM) belongs to the Regional Secretariat for the Economy, Sea and Fisheries (SRAP) of the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

Its Mission is to propose regional policies for the sea and coordinate the development of Madeira’s maritime strategy; to strengthen established traditional sectors and promote the development of emerging sectors within the blue economy, with the aim of enhancing and ensuring the sustainability of marine resources, exploration, preservation, and marine research.

  • Promote the implementation of the policy defined by the Regional Government of Madeira for maritime affairs;
  • Promote the planning and management of the maritime space of the Madeira sub-region;
  • Prepare and propose strategic plans for the maritime sector;
  • Implement national and EU directives and operational and legal instruments related to the sea;
  • Promote marine scientific research and the installation and monitoring of Artificial Reefs;
  • Promote the sustainable exploitation of marine resources;
  • Implement Oceanic Marine Protected Areas;
  • Ensure the licensing of activities and uses of the sea;
  • Supervise compliance with legal and regulatory standards regarding maritime matters;
  • Promote Ocean Literacy;
  • Take part in trials of different fishing and aquaculture techniques, methods, gear, and equipment;
  • Study and promote food safety, innovation, and the added value of aquaculture products.
